What is Chalazion
A chalazion is also known as eye cyst, tarsal cyst, meibomian cyst or conjunctiva l granuloma. It is a swelling or lump that is formed on upper or lower eyelid due to the blockage of the oil glands. It develops more commonly on the upper eyelids. Many a times chalazion is confused with a stye, but chalazion or eyelid cysts are large, less painful, non-contagious and have a characteristic hard lump that is localized along with the swelling that spreads to the surrounding area. When it gets infected, it swells and become red, irritated and painful.
What Causes Chalazion
Near our eyelashes, there are meibomian glands. They produce oil that maintains the lubrication of the eyes by producing tears. If any of the ducts that drain the meibomian glands get blocked, the blocked duct increases in size and results in the development of the eye cyst. However, in some of the cases, the obstruction may be caused due to the thickness and increased viscosity of oil in the glands.
Some other causes of chalazion are skin issues such as rosacea, makeup residue, and insect bite. Very rarely eyes cyst develops due to skin cancer.
