It develops more commonly on the upper eyelids. What Causes Chalazion

Near our eyelashes, there are meibomian glands. They produce oil that maintains the lubrication of the eyes by producing tears. If any of the ducts that drain the meibomian glands get blocked, the blocked duct increases in size and results in the development of the eye cyst. However, in some of the cases, the obstruction may be caused due to the thickness and increased viscosity of oil in the glands.

This prevents the oil from flowing freely and building up in the duct. People with naturally thick oil and those who are in the habit of touching eyelids again and again with their unclean hands are more prone to eye cysts. A chalazion is more common in adults as compared to the children.
Some other causes of chalazion are skin issues such as rosacea, makeup residue, and insect bite. Very rarely eyes cyst develops due to skin cancer.
