Elderly, pregnant when an infant, immunocompromised patients and people with chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, or lung diseases are more at the risk of developing flu. Also, those who spend more time in classroom, daycare, college dormitories, offices, nursing homes and military barracks are more likely to get it.

As flu is not caused by bacteria, antibiotics are of no use. Antivirals may ease the symptoms, but you can also try simple home remedies to alleviate the symptoms.

Home Remedies for Flu

Ginger-

Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory. It fights off the infection and also strengthens the immune system. Steep a half teaspoon f grated ginger n a cup of steaming water. After 5 minutes strain and add a half teaspoon of honey to the solution and drink it three times in a day.

Honey-

Honey boost the body immunity, eases the symptoms of flu and speeds up is healing. It is a natural antimicrobial and a humectant that soothes a sore throat. Add a tablespoon of honey to a glass of warm water and drink it. Drink honey water three times in a day.

Garlic-

Garlic is antiviral, antibacterial and antiseptic. Allicin present in its immune-booster and relieves the symptoms of flu. Steep a few crushed garlic cloves in a cup of steaming water. After 10 minutes strain and drink the concoction warm. Drink garlic tea three times in a day. Also, add garlic to cooking.

Steam inhalation-

Fill a bowl with hot water and place your face on it. Cover your head with a towel and inhale deeply and exhale for a few minutes. Repeat this a few times in a day. Steam unclogs the nasal passage, eases congestion and also relieves dryness of nasal passage.

Bone broth and Chicken Soup-

Bone broth or chicken soup provides warmth and alleviates flu symptoms. Warm liquids reduce inflammation and thin mucus. Also, they are very nutritious and boosts immunity.
Prevention is always better than cure. To prevent flu avoid close contact with the infected person and do not share food and drinks. Wash your hands at regular interval. Avoid rubbing your mouth nose and eyes. If you have developed symptoms of flu, it’s your sole duty to prevent its spread. Better stay at home and avoid crowded places. Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.

Living a healthy life boost immunity and keeps influenza and other diseases at bay so stay active, eat nutritious food, drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep. Also practice healthy habits like cleaning and disinfecting surface at school, work at home that are often touched. Always discard used tissues in dustbins.
