Weird vegetarian food from all around the world!

One of the thing that brings happiness to me is the ability to explore, cook and try a variety of dishes. Being a vegetarian myself I wanted to take my taste buds on a tour by trying out the weirdest food items that are available for a vegetarian. You’d be surprised to read these weird vegetarian food from around the world which are naturally meatless and also delicious.

Vegetarian delicacy #1: Tempeh

Source of protein originated in Indonesia.
Usually found in the refrigerated food section, pretty tasty and perfectly safe to eat.
This looks weird and appears somewhat like a cake. It’s bumpy and has spots that appear like mold, this is due to fungus spores. So what’s left behind is fermented soy cake.

Vegetarian delicacy #2: Seitan

This made using wheat, high in protein.
Used as an alternative for meat.
The starch in the flour is removed, there’s only gluten which when cooked and seasoned will taste delicious just like meat.
Could be used as an alternative to chicken in chicken wings or as a vegetable in Thai curry.

Vegetarian delicacy #3: Nutritional yeast

It has a strong flavor and is described as cheesy, nutty or creamy so often used as a cheese substitute.
Can be used in mashed potato recipes, popcorn and so on.

Vegetarian delicacy #4: Miso

This is fermented soy paste made using rice barley and other ingredients.
Popular for salad dressings and sauces.
Reduces cardiovascular problem

Vegetarian delicacy #5: Kimchi

Korean dish made using fermented cabbage, vegetables and other unique ingredients.
Could be quite spicy.
It appears somewhat like tentacles of squid, but is very tasty.
It is known for its pungency.

Vegetarian delicacy #6: Mochi

This refers to rice which is pounded into a paste and then shaped.
Originated from japan.
Commonly made into ice cream and sweets however, can be used in soups too.

Vegetarian delicacy #7: Agar agar

This is a replacement for gelatin and is made using red algae.
It is found both in flakes as well as in powder form. This purely vegetarian and can be used for almost all recipes.

Vegetarian delicacy #8: Durian

This is a stinky fruit found in Singapore.
Smells like a rotten onion, vomit, sewage but it is yummy.
It is thorny and heavy.
If you can close your nose, get past the smell and try it out you’re going to love this one.

Vegetarian delicacy #9: Casu Marzu

This is also called as maggot cheese.
It is fermented so that it actually begins to decay, and turns liquidy.
At this stage insect larvae start growing on it.
People do enjoy eating these maggots, but be careful when you eat because these larvae can jump and hurt your eyes.
