The skin around the anus is relatively loose to allow an opening for stool to pass through. The blood vessels in the underlying hemorrhoids expand, making it easier to grow. Stretched skin is persistent and can cause lumps and skin tags.
Anal skin tags are usually due to inflammation from previous hemorrhoids. This can occur after relapse of hemorrhoids during pregnancy, external hemorrhoidal thrombosis, attempts at constipation or diarrhea, lifting heavy objects, or strenuous exercise.
Small asymptomatic labels are very common. Larger labels are often associated with swelling, itching, feeling of weight, hygiene problems, and skin rashes.
After preparing with antibacterial soap and mild relaxants, the enlarged label can be safely removed in the office with a topical injection of lidocaine. The use of small needles and the attenuation of lidocaine can rapidly blunt the area. Patients with reeds can take mild sedative oral painkillers prior to the procedure.
One tag is removed for each visit to limit pain and complications. Small wounds usually remain open and the base is treated to minimize bleeding.
Dis solvable sutures may be used to tie internal hemorrhoids within the opening of the anus.
