It may also happen on missing a feed Bacterial infections may also cause mastitis. If you do not know how to latch your baby correctly, then bacteria from your baby’s mouth penetrates through the skin pores and cuts and enters your mammary ducts causing swelling and soreness. If you detect blocked mastitis in 24 hours better massage your breast, take a warm bath or use a warm pack to reduce inflammation and pains. For massage take a little oil and with your fingers rub the affected area upward and backwards in continuous motion towards the nipples. Breastfeeding baby while massaging also helps. Feed the baby regularly. If thickness persists even after all the efforts for more than 24 hours consult a doctor for treatment. Healthcare provider may give you antibiotics to stop the bacteria from damaging cells and mammary glands.

To prevent recurrent mastitis make sure to consume a properly balanced diet rich in mineral and vitamins to boost body immunity. Drink lots of water to maintain the proper level of blood composition. Also, your doctor may prescribe a prolonged low dose antibiotic for two to three months or through the entire duration of lactation.
