The bloodshot eye may be due to eye strain, exposure to smoke, eye infection, allergy or overindulgence in alcohol. A subconjunctival haemorrhage or burst blood vessel in the eye also causes bloodshot eyes. No need to worry. It may sound an emergency situation, but it is harmless and disappears itself in a couple of weeks or so. Even a cough or a strong sneeze may cause burst a blood vessel in eye. Home Remedies to Treat Burst Blood Vessels

Ice-

The first line of treatment to treat burst blood vessels is always ice cubes. Application of cold not only reduces the flow of blood but also heals the broken blood vessels. But as I have mentioned in many of my previous articles ice should not be applied to the skin or even eyes. So wrap ice cubes in a clean cotton cloth and place it on your closed eyelids for a few seconds. Give a gap of a few seconds and apply again. Repeat this for a few minutes. Repeat this whole process 4-5 times in a day.

Cucumber-

Cucumber has a cooling effect. It also relaxes tired eyes. Also, it has the astringent property that dissolves blood clots. Slice a cucumber. Put a cucumber in the refrigerator. After half an hour remove the chilled cucumber from the refrigerator and slice it. Place two slices on your eyes. Relax for 10 minutes. Repeat this 2-3 times in a day.

Rosewater-

Rose water is antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. It has rejuvenating and healing properties. Pour a few drops of rose water on a cotton ball and place it on your closed eyelids for 15 minutes. Repeat this 2- times in a day.

Raw potato-

Potato is rich in vitamin E that is an antioxidant. Also, the potato is rich in minerals and treats the burst blood vessels fast. Slice a medium sized potato and put the slices in refrigerator for 1 hour. After an hour place the chilled potato on your closed eyelids for a few minutes. Repeat this three times in a day.

Green tea bag-

Green tea is rich in antioxidants. It is antibacterial and removes the tiredness of eyes. Steep two green tea bags in a cup of steaming water for 2 minutes and then keep the teabags in the refrigerator for half an hour. Place the chilled tea bags on your closed eyelids for one few minutes. Repeat this many times in a day.

Milk –

Milk is an ideal remedy to treat burst blood vessels in eyes as it has the property to dissolve blood clots. It relieves any discomfort caused due to injury. Soak two cotton balls in chilled milk. Squeeze to remove excess of milk and place the cotton balls on your closed eyes. Remove the cotton balls and discard them. Repeat this two times a day.

Besides the above home remedies to treat burst blood vessels in eye get proper sleep and avoid alcohol and smoking. Also, make sure to sleep with your head elevated with the help of a pillow. Another precaution you need to take is to avoid exposure to dust and bright light. Better wear sunglasses before stepping out in the sun. Do not take blood-thinning drugs such as aspirin and warfarin.
In case of pain and bleeding from eyes do not delay and consult an ophthalmologist as soon as possible.
